Lake Tana & Blue Nile
Ethiopia's largest lake feeds the Blue Nile and shelters roughly twenty monastery communities across its islands and peninsulas, several holding illuminated goatskin gospels several hundred years old. Bahir Dar is the gateway; the best hours are on the water before the day boats arrive.

Why We Go
Island monasteries guarding centuries-old manuscripts, at the river's true source.
The monastery paintings here follow a visual grammar centuries old — saints and demons rendered in the same flattened, wide-eyed style regardless of when a particular building was finished, so a fifteenth-century wall can sit beside a nineteenth-century one almost without a seam.
We favour a private boat and an early start, ahead of the day-tripper crossings from Bahir Dar, followed by a slow breakfast on the water once the morning haze has burned off.
Tis Issat — the Blue Nile Falls — sits a short drive south of Bahir Dar. After the rains the curtain is wide and loud; in the dry months it narrows but the Portuguese bridge and the gorge walk remain worth the morning. Pair the lake with Gondar or the Simien for a northern circuit that never feels rushed, or use Bahir Dar as a soft landing after Addis before the mountains begin.
