Lake Tana & Blue Nile
Ethiopia's largest lake feeds the Blue Nile and shelters roughly twenty monastery communities across its islands and peninsulas, several holding illuminated goatskin gospels several hundred years old.
Why We Go
Island monasteries guarding centuries-old manuscripts, at the river's true source.
The monastery paintings here follow a visual grammar centuries old — saints and demons rendered in the same flattened, wide-eyed style regardless of when a particular building was finished, so a fifteenth-century wall can sit beside a nineteenth-century one almost without a seam.
We favour a private boat and an early start, ahead of the day-tripper crossings from Bahir Dar, followed by a slow breakfast on the water once the morning haze has burned off.
Highlights
- 01A private boat to Ura Kidane Mehret, its interior painted floor to ceiling
- 02Illuminated manuscripts shown by the monks who still keep them
- 03Tis Issat, the Blue Nile Falls, running fullest just after the rains
- 04A tankwa reed-boat launch at first light, before the wind picks up
- 05The Zege Peninsula's coffee forest, walked on shaded trails between its monasteries
- 06The seventeenth-century Portuguese bridge below the falls, the first stone bridge of its kind in Ethiopia
Best combined with a stay of 1 – 2 days, travelling September – March.
