Gondar
Founded by Emperor Fasilides in 1636 as Ethiopia's first permanent capital, its walled compound of stone castles blends Aksumite, Nubian and Portuguese-Jesuit building styles across six royal reigns.
Why We Go
A seventeenth-century royal capital of castles — and the gateway town for the Simien Mountains.
Six emperors added to this compound over roughly two hundred years, each building against — rather than replacing — what came before, so the walls read almost like tree rings of a single dynasty's ambitions.
Most circuits treat Gondar as a one-night hinge, and they miss the point. It sits a hundred kilometres from the Simien trailhead at Debark, which makes it the natural base for the mountains: we give it a full unhurried day before a trek and a slower evening after one, when a hot shower and a plate of tibs in the old piazza feel earned.
Leave room for the edges of town too — the Beta Israel village at Wolleka, the Saturday market below the old piazza, and a coffee ceremony in a family courtyard rather than a hotel lobby.
