Cliff Churches · Tigray

Gheralta

A range of red sandstone massifs in eastern Tigray, hiding more than thirty rock-hewn churches — several carved high into cliff faces between the fifth and fifteenth centuries, and still served by their priests every Sunday.

Why We Go

Churches cut into sandstone towers, some reached only by handholds and bare feet.

Lalibela is the famous one, but Gheralta is older and stranger: rather than lowered into the ground, these churches were hollowed into the sides of rock towers, some so exposed that the final approach is a barefoot climb with a priest calling out footholds from above.

The effort is the point. Inside, the paintings have survived in near-darkness for centuries, unretouched and almost unvisited, and there is rarely anyone else on the path. We walk the range with a local Tigrayan guide and send climbers only as far as they are comfortable — the valley-floor churches are just as painted and need nothing more than a morning walk.

We run Gheralta when regional conditions allow and confirm access with our partners on the ground in the weeks before every departure, never assuming.
