Danakil Depression
A tectonic triple junction where the African and Arabian plates pull apart — sulphur fields at Dallol, salt flats at Lake Karum (Assale) still cut by hand, and Erta Ale, whose lava lake is often active but never guaranteed.

Why We Go
One of the lowest, hottest points on the continent, and one of the most geologically active.
This basin sits well below sea level at a rift triple junction — the reason the crust here is thin enough for colourful hydrothermal fields and periodic lava lakes. Dallol's terraces shift colour with minerals and light; the salt plain around Karum remains a working landscape, not a museum.
Erta Ale has been in near-continuous activity for more than a century, but the open lava lake comes and goes. We climb for the caldera rim either way: when the lake is molten it is unforgettable; when it is quiet, the night sky and the crater floor still justify the walk.
We treat Danakil as an expedition rather than a sightseeing day: reinforced vehicles, a guide trained in field medicine, an Afar community liaison, chilled water without rationing, and a pace that respects heat, distance and a landscape with no margin for improvisation. Travel only in the cooler months of November to February.
Highlights
- 01The mineral terraces of Dallol at sunrise, before the heat sets in
- 02A night ascent to the rim of Erta Ale — lava lake when active, caldera and desert sky when quiet
- 03Afar camel trains cutting slabs of salt from Lake Karum (Assale) for the highland trade
- 04A sky with no artificial light for hundreds of kilometres in any direction
- 05The descent from Mekele into Hamed Ela as the temperature climbs through the afternoon
Best combined with a stay of 3 – 4 days, travelling November – February.
