Sof Omar Caves

East of the Bale Mountains, the Weyib River has carved Ethiopia's longest cave — 15.1 kilometres of passages and chambers that were the longest known in Africa when they were surveyed in 1972.

Why We Go

Fifteen kilometres of river-carved limestone passages, sacred to two faiths.

The Weyib River sinks into the rock at the Ayiew Maco entrance and reappears a kilometre away at the Holuca resurgence, and between the two it has hollowed out a labyrinth of more than fifteen kilometres. The most famous hall, the Chamber of Columns, is a forest of limestone pillars carved by water over a very long time.

Sof Omar has been a religious centre for centuries. Tradition says it is named after a Muslim holy man who lived here, and Ayiew after his daughter; the cave is sacred both to Islam and to the traditional religion of the Oromo, and pilgrims still come.

It lies about 110 kilometres east of Robe, in the lowlands below the Bale Mountains, which is why we usually pair it with a Bale journey — Ethiopian wolves on the Sanetti Plateau one day, an underground river the next. Visits are always made with a local guide.
