Ras Dashen
At 4,550 metres, Ras Dashen crowns the eastern Simien — a full week's walk from the road-served western rim, through river valleys, farming villages and the Afro-alpine base camp at Ambiko.
Why We Go
Ethiopia's highest peak, reached through the far side of the Simien few trekkers ever see.
The summit itself is a scramble up a rock tower rather than a technical climb — what makes Ras Dashen serious is the altitude and the distance, not the difficulty. Most of the week is spent above 3,500 metres, and the day before the summit drops a thousand metres into a river valley only to climb it all back again.
The reward is a side of the Simien that the day-trip crowds never reach: villages where the trail runs past the threshing floors, children herding goats along the ridge, and camps with nothing in view but more mountain. We build in an acclimatisation day on the western rim first, and turn around without hesitation if the altitude says so.
