Menagesha Suba Forest
On the slopes of Mount Wechecha, west of the capital, Menagesha Suba is often called the oldest protected area in East Africa — replanted with juniper and set aside by Emperor Zara Yaqob in the fifteenth century.
Why We Go
A juniper forest protected by imperial decree since the fifteenth century, forty kilometres from Addis.
The forest's story begins with Emperor Zara Yaqob, who in the fifteenth century ordered the degraded slopes replanted with juniper and placed under protection. Whatever the exact claim to being the oldest protected area in East Africa, it has been cared for as a forest for more than five hundred years.
Today it is simply one of the best walks near Addis Ababa: trails under tall juniper, clearings with views back toward the city, and — for those who want more — the climb toward the 3,385-metre summit of Mount Wechecha.
We use Menagesha as a gentle first day for guests acclimatising before a trek, and as a half-day of fresh air for anyone with time to spare in the capital.
