Most trips give Lalibela a day and a half. We give the town its dawns and dusks, then walk and drive out to Asheton Maryam, Nakuto La'ab and the cave church of Yemrehanna Kristos — older than Lalibela itself, and almost unvisited.

Day by Day
The itinerary, as it usually runs
A working draft rather than a fixed schedule — we move days around for weather, festivals and how you are feeling.
Day 1
Arrive Lalibela
Straight to Bete Giyorgis for the late light on its cross-shaped roof, then dinner above the town.
Day 2
The two church clusters
The northern cluster at dawn with the morning service, then through the trench passages to Bete Golgotha and the eastern group once the crowds have gone.
Day 3
Asheton Maryam & Nakuto La'ab
A morning climb to the cliff monastery of Asheton Maryam, on foot or by mule, and the cave church of Nakuto La'ab in the afternoon.
Day 4
Yemrehanna Kristos & departure
The drive out to a church built of wood and stone inside a cave, a century older than Lalibela's, before an afternoon flight.
