Choke Mountains Trek

Village to village onto the moorland that feeds the Blue Nile — the northern trek almost nobody has done.

The Journey

4 nights, designed around the hours that matter

A community-run trek on the Choke massif in Gojjam, recognised by UN Tourism as one of the Best Tourism Villages of 2022. Three days on foot from the farming villages up onto the high moor and back, camping as guests of the ecovillage — simple, uncrowded, and best for walkers who have already done the Simien.

Day by Day

The itinerary, as it usually runs

A working draft rather than a fixed schedule — we move days around for weather, festivals and how you are feeling.

  1. Day 1

    Arrive Bahir Dar

Met at the airport, a kit check and route briefing, and a night by the lake.

  2. Day 2

    To the ecovillage

South into Gojjam and up to the foothills of Choke, where the villagers who host the trek hold a welcome for arriving walkers.

  3. Day 3

    Onto the moor

Up through terraced farmland onto the Afro-alpine moor of giant lobelia and tussock grass, where dozens of Blue Nile tributaries begin, to camp in a high village.

  4. Day 4

    The high massif

A full day on the upper moor toward the summit ridge above 4,000 metres, watching for the endemic Abyssinian longclaw, then back down to camp.

  5. Day 5

    Down to Addis Ababa

A morning descent to the road, then south through Debre Markos and across the Blue Nile gorge to Addis Ababa by evening.
